Singapore

In 2009, Economist Intelligence Unit has ranked Singapore the 10th most expensive city in the world in which to live.  It is the 3rd most expensive Asian city to live in, after Japanese cities Tokyo and Osaka. The population of Singapore is approximately 4.86 million.  Singapore is highly cosmopolitan and diverse with Chinese people forming an ethnic majority with large populations of Malay, Indian and others. English, Malay, Tamil, and Chinese are the official languages.

JR Hickman

Living in Singapore

Life in Singapore had been exciting for JR. New living environment, working culture, colleagues, friends and even his roommate! He made many new friends during his first year in Singapore. And in early 2009, a twist of fate crossed the path of JR with a petite Singapore lady – Cui Mei. He was working in In-Room Dining at Fairmont Singapore, while she was in Purchasing Office for the hotel.  They have been dating for a year now. Both of them took new jobs this year. JR is now with the magnificent Marina Bay Sands Hotel, while Cui Mei has joined the government workforce. They might have left the location of where their story started, but they brought with them the precious friendships made at Fairmont Singapore and the experience of working under the same roof. Both JR and Cui Mei are now focusing on their new jobs and continuing to learn about each other as they find time to work on their relationship. The are great about spending more time with Joe too. Dinners and drinks, casual discussions of east vs. west and simply sharing of their day. It had been an incredible journey for JR and Cui Mei and with only more to come along. Watch out for them!

Alexis Hickman

Living in Irvine, CA

Alexis buzzed through University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) in 3  years & is now attending University of California, Irvine (UCI).  She received her Masters in Urban Planning (MURP) last year and is now in the process of getting her PHD in Public Policy. Better yet, Alexis was granted a 3-year fellowship by UCI! Alexis still manages to get home to Singapore once or twice a year to spend time with Joe and JR. Alexis is starting her 3rd year of her PhD and about to advance to candidacy for her doctorate. Traveling to Bangkok, Thailand to research environmental planning and policy. Adam is finishing up his 4th year as in his PhD and will be done within this academic year. He is looking at job opportunities that range from Washington state to Germany. Alexis, of course, votes for moving international. They are both vacillating between a life in academia or industry/professional. The options are pretty much open right now. They will be heading to Hawaii for Christmas this year. Its not all fun, Adam has to attend a conference in Hawaii half of the time, but at least the department is paying for the hotel! Adam and Alexis celebrated their fifth year of dating in May.

Joe Hickman

Life in Asia

Joe continues to travel Asia Pacific for his job with Interval International.  When not on the road he still enjoys working on his website, fooling around with his camera especially when on holiday in countries like Myanmar, Vietnam, Thailand etc.  The month of May marked the 25th year that Joe has lived in Asia.  25 years ago he dragged his family halfway round the world to Malaysia on what was supposed to be a 2-year contract... 2 turned to 4 years, 4 to 8 years and so on.  He has resided in Singapore for 15 years now and thinks of it as home.

The Hickmans have called Asia home for 25 years. Malaysia, Philippines, Hong Kong &, for the past 15 years, Singapore.  Joe & JR now both live & work here, Alexis is living & working on her PHD at UC Irvine. The purpose of our website is to give you a glimpse at what's going on in their lives; important events, simple moments and times they simply laugh at themselves. Here they share their stories, photos, adventures and experiences to various parts of the world.
